MOM REVIEW:
November 5, 2013Like others, I skipped the green pepper and added a little horseradish. Pretty close to KFC (and maybe better)

July 5, 2013Very good but yeah omit the green pepper. It's fine with it if you really want it, but not KFC's version.

There is no green pepper in KFC coleslaw but there is horseradish. To my knowledge, there is no such thing as horseradish powder (the others are either too strong or clumpy), how about using a food processor to cut the root into exceedingly small pieces, dry, and then re-introduce into the liquid ingredients?

Cabbage, onions, carrots, salt, sugar, Miracle Whip(regular),vegetable oil,"Taragon" vinegar. No green pepper. I worked for KFC in the 60's and 70's. We made the coleslaw at the restaurant. Frejlach's Ice Cream Company in Berwyn, IL. The family pasted away and so did the business. The taragon vinegar I made myself. Soak the vinegar with herb til it turned a amber color, then strained. The recipe was: 70lbs. of cabbage, 5lbs. of carrots, two large spanish onions, 5gals. of Miracle Whip, one cup of salt, 8cups of white sugar, one gallon of taragon vinegar, 2 quarts of oil. The vegetables were chop on a Hobart rotating bowl chopper into small size. (size of a pea). If you break down the portions by one eighth. Get a big bowl and chop away. Sincerely (down memory lane), Norman

I worked at KFC in the 70's and 80's and this recipe is close to the real thing. There were no green peppers in it and the vinegar you should use is Tarragon. Also, use regular Miracle Whip. Otherwise, it's spot on. I still make it for parties and BBQ's and everyone goes nuts over it!

se_daffron REVIEW:
July 7, 2008This was great! I did what someone else did and used 2 bags of the cole slaw mix. Since it had plenty of carrots in it, I didn't add more. I also left out the green pepper since I don't like that. I followed the rest of the recipe exactly and it came out perfectly. I served it yesterday for a large crowd we had for dinner, and they all loved it. Thanks for the super recipe!!
