(Reguarding my recent Fandom vs Cannon post for the Diabolik Lovers boys)

Yes, they are sadistic and cruel in their nature to nearly everyone- that is how they are. However, when I pointed out these traits I was not stating that I was closed minded to the idea that they can change. I was simply reminding everyone that in the beginning that is indeed how they are. It’s not that they’re incapable of being loving and gentle to their s.o. because they absolutely are. It just that they wouldn’t act that way to someone they had just met. Like any relationship it takes time to build that trust and love, especially for them. My intention was not to discourage anyone from portraying the boys in a sweet or loving way. As we canonically see in vandead carnival, they indeed do have a sweet side to them when they open up. What I am trying to advise against is people verbally abusing those who happen to enjoy the darker sides of their personality and deny that these traits exist all together. I had one anonymous person send me a message telling me how my writing was shit because I didn’t portray the boys in a sweet and loving way and how their behavior was abusive- even though the writing request was the reader getting a harsh punishment from Ruki. They said that my inaccurate portrayals of their personality promoted abusive relationships and I should kill myself for endorsing such actions. I, of course, laughed. You deny their canonical traits from the games and anime which play into the enjoyment of sadomasochism while telling me that I should kill myself for inaccurate character portrayal??? Apologies dear anon, but it’ll take a lot more than that petty argument to get under my skin. Overall message: I love their sadistic sides, I love their romantic sides. And they both exist.When you gain their love and trust under the broken mask they can become just as sweet and loving as people portray them. Never let someone’s comments or attacks stop you from wanting to write them a certain way. We can simply enjoy all of their sides together as one fandom. 💙

Dear heavens, are people actually bothered when they see people portraying the vampires how they personally wish?

News flash, they ARE abusive. It is in the game. Holy moly do we need a crash course on some of the terrible things that these boys did:

• kill each other (ayato, kanato, reiji)
  
• kill the mc (oh boy, where do I begin)
  
• sexually abuse the mc (most of them)
• verbally abuse the mc (making her feel insignificant, dumb, weak)
• psychologically abuse the mc (making her feel powerless, hopeless, depressed)
• physically abuse the mc (shoving her, pushing her down, threats, wall punching, choking, slapping)

HDB arguably depicted the Sakamaki at their cruelest (then you have MB Ayato…), and then in the later games, they undergo character development and their behavior towards the heroine noticeably changes. Since the entire span of their character development stretches across 6 games (even within the games), no one can say that the boys are strictly one way or another. It is perfectly valid for people to write them either way, according to personal tastes.

If that’s true, then this is like saying that DL is a pure and fluffy otoge with well-mannered vampires that treat the mc like a princess. Because that’s the only way that ‘inaccurate portrayals’ would make sense in that statement. And we know DL is not any of that. But we can’t claim that DL by itself promotes abuse or glorifies abuse because that is like saying horror movies promote murder. Which is utter bs. Yui is never shown to enjoy the sht that the boys did to her - she is either thinking about ways to thwart them, or how to escape (depending on how badly she is treated), or how to cope with her situation as best as she could.

Want to know what actually promotes abusive relationships though? Rationalizing and making excuses for abuse.

Now, I love Ayato. He is my favorite character; I find him funny, cool, sexy, exasperating, and relatable. I wish I could have protected him as a child, and I wish he never had to feel like it’s him vs the world. No, I’m not going to ignore his actions, or make up Freudian excuses about how his abuse of Yui is justified because he was abused by his mother. I have no problem discussing his faults and how terrible he is, because he is terrible at times. It is how he was written. Things like “he said those cruel and harsh words, but he never really intended to hurt her with them” or “the reason why he acts the way he does is because he was scared to trust” are rationalizations that shift accountability off of the abuser.You do not want people to make rationalizations or excuses when they are in a bad relationship, because 1) it can get them killed (and it does happen), and 2) there are fans who will legitimately take it as advice to stay with someone who treats them badly.

Those rationalizations are also generic.Can the first quote apply to Laito from HDB? He intended to hurt her for amusement. Can the second quote apply to Reiji? It was inferiority and anger that drove his actions, not fear of trust. Then I see things like “he can finally believe that he is a good guy” and“he’ll never have to face this ugly, nasty, dark world on his own” and I facepalm because it feels like I’m in the Twilight zone.
