Several Southeast Texas school districts out-perform state average in STAAR results (2024)

There are several school districts in our viewing area that excelled on the state's federal report card with scores that out-performed the state average.

These scores are based on how students did on the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR)

Here are just a few of them.

The Texas average score on the STAAR test for all students in all grades on all subjects in the category of approaching grade level or above was 67 percent.

- Vidor ISD scored 69 percent

- Port Neches-Groves 77 percent

- Lumberton 78 percent

- Nederland 79 percent

Nederland superintendent Stuart Kieschnick, Ed.D told us, "Nederland ISD has a long-standing tradition of excellence in the classroom. It is no secret that the last few years have presented many challenges to school districts. However, our faculty, students, and staff adjusted to the circ*mstances and performed well. We are very proud of them and the scores received on the Federal Report Card. We look forward to seeing the progress our students make in the future."

Lumberton ISD's director of communications and community relations Mary Johnson, Ed.D, issued the following statement about her district's performance:

The Texas Education Agency recently released local, regional, and statewide results for STAAR (State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness) taken during 2021. Lumberton ISD students far outperformed Region 5, and the State of Texas in all tested categories. In ost tested areas, LISD students performed at high levels very close to the 2019 scores. Additionally, in a few areas, LISD students fared better in 2021 than in 2019 pre-pandemic assessments (e.g. 3rd grade Math and Reading, 6th grade Reading, 8th grade Social Studies, and high school US History).

Lumberton ISD Superintendent. Dr. Tony Tipton, cited the extraordinary and heroic work done by the teachers in the District as a driving factor in student success. “We have phenomenal teachers in LISD at every level. I think we’ve always known that, but these assessment results emphasize the amazing work they did during the spring 2019 shutdown, and the 2020-21 school year” said Tipton. “Pulling off an unbelievably successful school year took the collective effort of every District employee. I’m so proud of our entire district and the team we’ve put in place. It takes the combined skills of every employee in every department to successfully accomplish the daily activities of a district our size. The community should be extremely proud of these results and of our kids for being able to focus on learning even during the most difficult school year in history. A special thanks goes out to our School Board for giving us the support and resources we need to serve our kids at a high level.”

Vidor superintendent Jay Killgo, Ed.D had this response to his district's high performance, "Vidor ISD is proud of our accomplishments and pleased to be recognized by the State of Texas for our excellence. We offer our students an in-person learning environment with many facets, and our success as a school district shines the spotlight on every single individual working here. Educating children truly is a team effort, and we are happy to be honored for a job well done."
