12 Best Paladin Gear Pieces in Baldur's Gate 3 & How to Get Them (2024)

Various class-specific magic items for Paladins boost their Channel Oath and Divine Smite features. I wanted to combine these with additional powerful Paladin magic items to create the ultimate holy warrior equipment list. Here’s my list of the best Paladin gear in Baldur’s Gate 3.

What are the Best Paladin Gear Pieces in Baldur’s Gate 3?

The best Paladin gear pieces in Baldur’s Gate 3 ultimately depend on your build and playstyle, but there are some that I recommend over others. While I go into more detail below and tell you why they’re great and where to get these Paladin gear pieces, here’s a quick look at the entire list:

  • Helmet of Smiting
  • Gloves of Heroism
  • Unflinching Protector Amulet
  • Disintegrating Night Walkers
  • Shield of Devotion
  • Mantle of the Holy Warrior
  • Adamantine Splint Armor
  • Killer’s Sweetheart
  • Blackguard’s Sword
  • Helm of Balduran
  • Helldusk Armor
  • Viconia’s Walking Fortress

12. Helmet of Smiting

The Helmet of Smiting is one of the best Paladin gear pieces in BG3’s early game. It gives you a chunk of temporary HP each time you use one of your Divine Smite spells and apply their effect. This increases overall tankiness, which you need for the upcoming Underdark fights. You can find this helmet in the Selunite Outpost when you enter the Underdark in one of the chests.

11. Gloves of Heroism

Another early-game item is the Gloves of Heroism. This Paladin gear piece gives you a free Heroism spell each time you use your Channel Oath feature. This means temporary HP and immunity to fear effects, which I combine with the Helmet for constant temp HP cycling to make a nasty combo. You can find these in a wooden chest in the basem*nt of the “Tyr Paladins” Toll House on the Risen Road by sitting on the two thrones.

10. Unflinching Protector Amulet

If you decide to steal the Githyanki Egg from the Monastery, you can get a neat defensive item to protect your party. This amulet allows you to negate an attack on a nearby ally once per Short Rest. You can loot it as a drop from Ptais in The Lodge after giving the Gith egg to Lady Esther.

9. Disintegrating Night Walkers

While Paladins are a menace at close range, the problem is usually closing the distance to key targets like mages and archers. Disintegrating Night Walkers protects you from all movement-hampering effects and gives you a free teleport once per Short Rest through Misty Step. In terms of mobility-granting boots, it’s the best Paladin gear in BG3. You can loot it from Nere in the Underdark.

8. Shield of Devotion

Paladins love Divine Smites and the Shield of Devotion gives you an extra spell slot to use them. You also get the Shield Bash trait and a free cast of a Level 3 Aid, increasing your HP and healing you by 10. Buy it from Talli in the Last Light Inn.

7. Mantle of the Holy Warrior

Lead the charge with this mantle. You can cast a free Crusader’s Mantle spell once per Long Rest. This means a +1d4 radiant damage for all your nearby allies, regardless of their weapons. I used this spell to great effect allowing my Lae’Zel Fighter and Astarion Thief Rogue to get huge damage boosts on their numerous attacks. This spell can deal 4d4 to 8d4 extra damage per round on average. I highly recommend you buy this cloak from Vicar Humbletoes in the Stormshore Tabernacle in Baldur’s Gate.

6. Adamantine Splint Armor

This is one of the best heavy armor sets and pieces of Paladin gear in Baldur’s Gate 3. And you can get it in Act 1. It provides 18 AC, makes you immune to critical hits, and reduces all damage taken by 2. Further, attackers receive a stacking penalty to their attack rolls when they hit you. If we’re talking about the ratio between how powerful an item is and how early you can get it, the Adamantine Split Armor is the best Paladin gear in BG3. Follow our Adamantine Forge guide to craft it.

5. Killer’s Sweetheart

This is an underrated Paladin gear option. The Killer’s Sweetheart ring gives you a guaranteed Critical Hit on your next attack roll after you kill a target. This only happens once per Long Rest, but you can deal large bits of burst damage. I usually drop a weaker enemy early in combat and then approach the boss, hitting them with my highest-level Divine Smite. I love watching all those Smite dice double on a massive crit. Complete the Self Same trial in the Gauntlet of Shar in Act 2 for this one.

4. Blackguard’s Sword or Any Magical Polearm

In terms of weapons, Paladins can use pretty much any one-handed weapon with a shield or a two-hander quite well. They’re very versatile. That said, I have two recommendations. The first is Blackguard’s Sword, a unique Longsword that directly boosts your Smites allowing you to potentially Daze a target you hit. Loot it from That Which Guards in the Bhaalist Crypt.

Magical Polearms is another. A powerful combination I used on my Paladin in the late game was a spear plus shield combo with the Polearm Master feat. The Polearm Master feat gives you an extra Bonus Action attack with polearms so you can Smite three times on your turn. You can use a two-handed polearm as well but I prefer the benefits of a shield with a one-handed spear. The best one-handed polearm in the game is Shar’s Spear of Evening or Selune’s Spear of Night.

3. Helm of Balduran

Now onto the three best Paladin gear late-game items I used for the final boss fight. The first is the Helm of Balduran, which heals you each turn for 2 HP, boosts your AC and saving throws by 1, and makes you immune to crits and the Stunned condition. You’ll have to beat Ansur to get it, but it’s worth it.

2. Helldusk Armour

Up next is the Helldusk Armour. This boasts the highest AC value in BG3, next to a high-Dex user with Armor of Agility. The Helldusk Armor retaliates fire damage on each enemy when you succeed on their saving throw. I do this a lot thanks to Aura of Protection. Additionally, you get Resistance to fire damage, you can’t be Burned, and you take 3 less damage from all sources. Did I mention you can Fly? Yep, the Helldusk Armor gives you a free once-per-long-rest Fly spell. A flying smiting tank is a scary sight to behold. Loot it from Raphael in the House of Hope.

1. Viconia’s Walking Fortress

Last but not least, we have the best shield and piece of Paladin gear in the game: Viconia’s Walking Fortress. It’s the perfect anti-mage shield offering +3 AC; it has a reaction that retaliates against an attacker for 2d4 Force damage; and it gives you Advantage on saving throws against spells while imposing Disadvantage on spell attack rolls.

Moreover, you can reflect projectiles back to the attacker and also protect allies with the Warding Bond spell. If you want to finish up your protector Paladin, you can get this item by defeating Viconia at the bottom of the House of Grief in Baldur’s Gate through Shadowheart’s quest.

That concludes my guide on the best Paladin gear in Baldur’s Gate 3. For more BG3 guides, check out the best spells for Paladins as well as our Paladin Deathknight build.
